For successful Japanese knotweed removal and control for residential sites – professional identification, surveying & treatment (including the legal disposal of controlled waste) should be entrusted to the professionals.
Identification of Japanese Knotweed
It is important to accurately identify invasive plants in your garden so as to know the correct method of eradication. Residential Knotweed Removal needs a specific eradication and management plan. Japanese knotweed can be mistaken for other plants including Russian vine; Himalayan honeysuckle; Houttuynia cordata and ‘Red Dragon‘.
In summer, Japanese knotweed will have dense stands of tall bamboo-like canes which grow to 7ft tall. These canes have purple flecks and produce branches from along its length. The leaves are heart or shovel-shaped and up to 14cm in length. The creamy-white flower tassels produced in summer and autumn can reach up to 15cm.
Identify invasive plants in your garden by sending us an image. We can then put in place an eradication and management plan.
If you are selling your property, it is your responsibility to check the garden for Japanese knotweed (bearing in mind that it can die back in winter).
Elcot Environmental are a specialist, professional company who are skilled at control, can ensure eradication and can dispose of the plant waste at licenced landfill sites.
On no account should Japanese knotweed be included with normal household waste or put out in green waste collection schemes.
Bear in mind that the home gardener will not get an insurance backed guarantee without using a professional company, such as Elcot, for the control of Japanese knotweed. This may be important if planning to sell your property in the near future or if a neighbour is threatening litigation from the spread of knotweed from your property.
Elcot Environmental offer professional Japanese knotweed removal. We can report on the risk for mortgage purposes with suggested treatment plans and offer insurance-backed guarantees where required.
Cutting back, and digging up the plant that you see above ground is not an effective method of dealing with it at all. A Knotweed plant can have roots that go up to four metres underground, so just “killing” the top bit will simply provide a temporary visible belief that you have solved your problem, but the underground root system (rhizome) is still alive and kicking, and will return in a short space of time. The only way to get rid of it permanently is to attack the root system, something that we have been experts in for almost 40 years.
Timescale: 3 – 4 growing seasons
This is the most widely used solution for the eradication of Japanese Knotweed. We use a sprayer with herbicides applied to the surface of the leaf. This method is best used during the summer months when we have maximum plant growth, the more leaf growth we have the better and more effective the treatment. We visit your property and spray the knotweed twice in the first two growing seasons.
Timescale: 3 – 4 growing seasons
This method involves injecting the herbicide directly into the stem of the plant. It is primarily used outside of the main summer growing season when we have no leaf area to spray.
Stem injection is a system used when the area of knotweed growth is in smaller concentration around your property.
Dig Out and Remove
Timescale: On-site work, depends on the size of the infested area, normally 1-2 weeks, followed by a monitoring plan.
This method involves excavating the Japanese Knotweed soil area and either removing off-site to a dedicated landfill or burying on site in a cell. Primarily this is a method utilized for major development and building work, but it can be used on private property, although the cost is higher than the other two methods above.
This is a quick method to remove and eradicate the infected area and allow the use of the previously affected area without restrictions.
